Door Handing

Product Handing

Varies by Product Type

Most products are handed as RH or LH. These include door closers, door pivots and most locks (but not all).

Exit Devices are always handed in Reverse, either RHR or LHR.

Some specialty locks, like push button combination locks are handed as RH, LH, RHR, or LHR.  These type locks have a latch that cannot be rotated to accommodate different door swings like the latch on a standard lock.

The biggest problem people have is knowing which side of the door to stand on when handing.  Because most hardware uses Standard Handing, stand on the PUSH side of the door.

The exception is exit devices which use Reverse Handing.  Stand on the PULL side of the door for exit devices.

Handing Tip: A LH door and a RHR door are the same thing.

Hardware Finishes

Finishes

Varies by Base Metal

Hardware can be made from steel, brass, bronze or aluminum. Finishes applied to these metals change appearance due to the individual properties of each metal.

For example, a polished brass finish applied to steel will appear much brighter than when applied to aluminum.

Pay attention to the base metal of the hardware.

Most commercial door hardware is fairly straightforward when it comes to finishes.  Locks and exit devices, for example, rarely have finish issues.

But even simple items such as door stops and hinges can throw you a curve if you're not paying attention.  Take a standard dome stop.  You can buy the cast brass version and it will have a true, bright finish.  Or, you can buy the aluminum version and receive a dull looking finish, but pay roughly 1/3 the price.

Anodized Finishes - Long lasting finish applied to aluminum and most commonly seen on exit devices.

Sprayed Finishes - Typically used on door closers, sprayed finishes are applied much like a car is painted. Sprayed colors simulate plated finishes but can be applied at a very low cost.
