» PS873-2 » Wiring » Timers » Other Modules Two Models Available![]() Von Duprin's standard power supply is model PS861. Use this model with an electric strike or a mag lock to control access to a single door. The PS861 is similar to models offered by other power supply makers. Model PS873 is a specially designed power supply for use with Von Duprin exit devices with the EL Electric Latch Retraction option. EL devices contain a large solenoid within the bar which retracts the latch when powered. This large solenoid requires 16 amps to activate. 16 Amps![]() 16 amps of power is a huge requirement for any electrical hardware. A standard mag lock, for example, pulls 1/2 amp of power. And that is why standard power supplies only produce an amp or two of power. There is rarely a need to supply more. But this solenoid is special. It must be able to retract both the latch on a standard device or the rods on a vertical rod device. This retracting process takes a great deal of energy due to Von Duprin's unique design. If you've ever replaced one of these solenoids (part no. 050535) you'll know it feels about the same as a hand grenade. This solenoid is truely a monster and it's power requirements affect every component of the system. This includes wire gauge, power transfer and power supply. System NeedsRemember that an Access Control System is just that, a system . Each component must be properly matched for the system to operate as intended. The 16 amp solenoid requires a minimum of 18 gauge wires to handle the power. Both the power transfer and the power supply must accept this thicker wire. these components add up to a system that is both unusual and expensive. |
