CM Locks

CM stands for Computer Managed as these locks are controlled by software downloaded to the lock. CM Locks are available as stand-alone locks or can be used with a Von Duprin exit device. Only one model is available for exit devices, CM993 and it works with 33A, 35A, 98 and 99 series devices.

The idea behind a CM lock is control access from the outside of the door by programming the lock with user codes. A person may only enter by using their personal user code.

CM locks are tricky to order and the manufacturer's data sheets don't offer much help. The data sheets provide a good overview of the locks but don't get down to the nuts and bolts of their operation. Many people spend a lot of money on these locks only to find out later they ordered the wrong combination of options. A few pointers are needed to keep out of trouble.

Ordering a stand-alone lock is much more difficult than ordering a CM993 for exit devices. The stand-alone locks come in diferent functions, backsets and latch types. None of these options are available with the CM993 as it is designed to work with an exit device only.

Most people run into trouble by getting hung up on all the ''bells and whistles'' available with the lock. These are simply code entry options that inlcude: Keypad, Card Swipe, Prox Reader and iButton. If you think of these as just different formats for entering a user code you'll be better off in the long run. These are nothing more than ''signal senders'' that come in different flavors.

It is best to focus instead on the actual operation of the lock itself. How it is programmed and what makes for the most secure system should be the areas of concern. A system is only as secure as you make it to be.
