Power Supplies - Von Duprin
PS-873
The most common module used is the 871-2, which is called a 2-Zone controller. The idea is it can control two doors from a single unit. But the most important feature of this module is it raises the output level to 16 amps of power, unique in the industry. And there is only one reason to furnish 16 amps of power, and this is to operate Von Duprin' "EL" devices. "EL" stands for electric latch retraction. A device with this option would have a model number that looks like this: EL99-EO. These devices contain a monster of a solenoid and therein lies the issue of 16 amps. We've put together a special Von Duprin Tutorial for these electronic products.
PS861
In that sense, it is much more of a standard design than the PS873. Only a few add-ons are available for the PS861, the most common being the battery backup.
PS9
It is used to provide external power to alarm kits or the Guard-X exit device. Both items use a 9v batter to power their alarms. There are applications where the battery alone is no sufficient and the PS9 is added. A typical application would be a remote area not monitored on a daily basis. Should the 9v battery die it would not be changed immediately. Therefore, a PS9 could be added and the unit would always have power. NOTE: adding a PS9 also requires that it's wires run down the door frame and through the door. The wires have to reach the device and this is the only means. Running the wires is more costly than the price of the power supply in most applications.
