How To Order Electric Strikes
Order by specifying: Model x Function x Voltage x
Finish
Function is the area that trips most people us because it relates to unfamiliar terms.
But there is an easy method for understanding function.
Imagine taking the electric strike out of the box and
holding it in your hand. If it is locked it is called
Fail Secure. That is, should the power
fail the lock will be
secure.
The opposite is Fail Safe.
Because different manufacturers use different terms for these two
functions, below is a quick guide to various terms used.
| Fail Safe |
Power Locked |
Add power to lock |
| Fail Secure |
Power Unlocked |
Add power to unlock |
Von Duprin likes to be different. They use the terms Fail
Safe (FS) and Non-Fail Safe (NFS), which only adds to the confusion.
The short version of the story is that most electric strikes sold
are Fail Secure (NFS). The reason is that the door is locked
99% of the time and a Fail Secure strike is at rest 99% of the time.
Ordering a Fail Secure (NFS) strike means it will last a long, long
time.
