98 and 99 - Von Duprin Devices
The 98 series has a smooth case. Beyond the case, all other features of the two series are identical, including the price. One reason the 99 series is more popular is that scratches and nicks are less apparent on a grooved case.
Device LengthDevice length is specified when ordering (99EO x 36). The standard length is "36", even though the device itself is shorter than than. When a "36" length is specified, it is really saying the device fits a standard 36" door. The other length available is 48". It fits doors up to 48" wide, but may also be cut down in the field for narrower doors. Roughly 5" may be cut from either device length.
Device Finishes
Plated finishes are more expensive since they are applied to a steel base metal and the finish process is more expensive. Aluminum finishes cost less. Ordering Examples:
Fire RatingsFire rated doors require fire-rated hardware. Exit devices are available both non-rated and rated. Fire-rated devices are more expensive, so make sure they are required before ordering. Von Duprin models that contain an "F" in the model are fire rated.
Outside TrimsThe one area that trips people up more than any other is Outside Trims. If you think of a Trim as a Bolt-On Accessory you'll be ahead of the game. Take the example of a door that has just a device mounted to the inside. As some point, a lever needs to be added to the outside. It's simply a matter of ordering the trim and bolting on the accessory. A few years later the lever needs to be replaced, but this time a knob is wanted on the outside. Here again, you simply un-bolt the lever and bolt on the knob.
When ordering an exit device by itself the designation is "EO", exit only. No entry is allowed from the outside as there is no outside trim. But if you want the device to come with a lever outside trim, you add "L" to the model number.
