Rixson Floor Closers:

There are 2 basic Rixson closer types - offset hung and center hung.

The Rixson arms determine the type. Rixson offset arms are ''L'' shaped and Rixson center hung arms are straight. (See below for more arm information.)

Before ordering a Rixson floor closer you must know the approximate weight of your door. Each closer is provided a maximum door weight rating to follow.

The last consideration is the hold-open function, which is optional. If you want the hold-open feature, most models offer two versions.

AHO = Automatic Hold Open. The hold-open feature is always on and cannot be shut off.

SHO = Selective Hold Open. You may turn the feature on or off in the field.

Rixson Pivots:

Like floor closers, there are 2 Rixson pivot types - offset hung and center hung. (See below for more arm information.)

The bottom pivot holds the key to the other model differences.

First, bottom pivots are designed to support various door weights. Determine the approximate weight of your door before ordering Rixson pivots.

Next, the bottom pivots offer different mounting types. Most rest on the floor, which is best for supporting the door weight. There are also other versions that partially mount to the frame. These ''pull'' on the frame and should be avoided unless absolutely required by the application.
Rixson Gate Closers:

Five different models are available, all taking the same body. The difference between the models are the top and bottom brackets.

354 and 355 both use a ''U'' bracket at the bottom, while 356 and 357 both use a ''FLAT'' bracket.

After selecting the type of bottom bracket you need, you determine the top bracket. One model has a surface mount bracket and the other a mortise mount.

Model 359 is a different animal than all the other four as it uses a sliding bottom track.

Arm Types
Two arm types are sold: Offset Arm and Center Hung
Offset Arm

Offset arms have the advantage of swinging the door out and around any trim on the frame.

Much like a standard butt hinge, the pivot point is well away from the door. This allows the door to ''swing clear'' of the frame.

The standard amount of offset is 3/4'', but 1-1/2'' versions are also available. Typically, the 1-1/2'' offset versions are factory order only.
Center Hung Arm

Center hung arms place the pivot point in the center of the door. If you have a door width of 1-3/4'', the pivot point will be in the center, or 7/8''.

These pivots can be used on wider doors as well, as long as they are placed in the center of the width.

One disadvantage of center hung arms is they allow the door to swing both directions (double acting).
Arm Notes
By far, the most popular arm type is Offset. These closely resemble the door action seen with standard hinges, but moves the weight off the frame and onto the floor.

Center Hung arms have certain advantages, but are used for special applications only. For example, a kitchen door in a restaurant needs to swing both ways (double acting).

To stop the door from swinging both ways you must apply a stop onto the frame.

You must also pay close attention to the bevel on the door edges. Center hung doors need a special bevel.

Rixson Floor Closers

Floor closers provide the best mechanical means of controlling a door. They are designed to work with the laws of physics to provide long-lasting performance and reliability. The weight of the door is supported entirely by the bottom arm, which is directly connected to the floor closer spindle. This hanging means provides several important mechanical advantages:

• Fasteners on the door and frame are in shear rather than tension (as with hinges) and are less likely to pull out over time. This creates less stress on the frame assembly, prevents door sagging and allows the door to swing with less resistance from friction.

• A door supported in this manner relies on the strength of the floor to carry the weight, not the frame. This allows extremely heavy doors to be hung in an opening and lets any weight door swing with more efficient geometry. Doors hung on Rixson floor closers also allow for vertical adjustment throughout the life of the building to compensate for settlement.

• The direct connection between the bottom arm and the floor closer spindle creates a tremendous increase in efficiency compared to surface closers with exposed arms. A floor closer produces an 85% closing force to opening force ratio where surface closers are approximately 60% efficient. A Rixson floor closer is far superior in closing a door when weather conditions or building stack pressure are factors.

Rixson® Heavy-Duty Floor Closers take this efficiency concept to an even higher level by utilizing helical torsion springs. In addition to these important mechanical and door control advantages, floor closers are fully concealed to maintain aesthetic design of the opening and to prevent vandalism or tampering by unauthorized individuals.
