The trick to CM Locks is knowing what not to order.
Start with the different ''types'' of CM Locks:
- CL - for universities only
- PRO - advanced features most people won't require
- CM - focus on this version, it is what most people order
Consider the CL and PRO versions of computer managed locks as specialized sub-categories of the CM Series.
You don't need these, stay away from them.
Standard CM Series
That means we're left with only the standard CM series. It too comes in three varieties:
Cylindrical, Mortise or Unit lock.
Forget about Unit Locks. They are highly specialized and rarely seen.
Cylindrical locks are installed through a bore hole in the door. They have a small 2-3/4'' high latch plate in the edge of the door.
Mortise locks look like a box and are installed into the door through the edge. The plate in the edge of the door is a little more than 8'' high.
If you are replacing locks it will be obvious which version you need. It you are buying for new doors then you must decide which version is best for you.
Mortise locks are more secure, but also more expensive.
Function
This is the tricky part. Functions are bad enough on regular locks but are really complicated in electrified locks.
But we'll make it easy for you.
Order the Office Function.
As long as you're buying locks for a commerical building the Office Function is for you.
Odds are very slim you'll need one of the other functions offered, unless you're buying for an Alzheimer's wing of a hospital, for example.
The Office function is designated by ''90'' at the end of the model number.
- CM5190 - Cylindrical Lock, Office Function
- CM5590 - Mortise Lock, Office Function
Stick with these two model numbers and you'll keep yourself out of trouble.
