Overhead Holders and StopsRead on for some key product tips or order online by clicking the
box below. SeriesEach Glynn Johnson series is either Concealed or Surface Mount. Concealed holders require special door and frame preps, often best performed at the factory. New construction projects work best as the preps are performed before the doors and frames arrive. The preps include frame reinforcements where the hardware will mount. Surface Mounted holders require the same type of reinforcements which is fine for new construction. But surface holders are often added after all the other hardware has been installed, and this is where things get tricky.
Most of the time there will be no reinforcement here. This presents a dilemma in retrofit applications as the frame itself is not strong enough to hold up over time. Another area of concern is the presence of a door closer. Adding and overhead holder in addition to a door closer can cause conflicts if the two need to mount in the same area. So it is important to know about frame reinforcements and other hardware to be used on the door before ordering. Some series of holders work better than others when conflicts exit. Data SheetsYou really have to do your homework before ordering overhead holders and stops. We list help files and data sheets online to get you headed in the right direction. More TipsAl models are available as a Stop Only or as Stop + Holder. Order the Stop Only if you simply want the hardware to stop the door swing at a certain point. Stops typically are set to stop the swing at 85 to 100 degrees. In short, an overhead stop serves the same purpose as a door stop mounted in the floor. Models that include an "S" in the number are stop only. Examples include 104S, 413S, etc. If you see an "H" in the model number the unit includes a Hold Open feature as well as the stop. All units provide the stop function but "H" units add the Hold feature as well.
Look for stop types that say "S-ADJ" as the mounting type is adjustable. It reduces installation problems. Friction type hold opens are more popular as they also cause fewer installation problems. With these types of holders the "H" designation changes to "F", which simply stands for friction type hold open. Ordering overhead hold opens and stops is tricky enough by itself, but you can reduce the problems by looking for "S-ADJ" and "F" type models. You'll also need to know as much as possible about the door and frame and any other hardware being used. Read the data sheets carefully and look for installation instructions before ordering.

A
typical installation has the holder mounted to the underside
of the frame stop. Sometimes frames arrive from the
factory with a reinforcement already in place. It
depends upon how the frames were ordered.
To
complicate the issue, there are different types of stops and
different types of hold open. And some types require more prep
work than others.
