Tips From The Pros

Ordering overhead stops is fairly simple if you follow a few basic rules.

First, if a door closer is also being used, pay attention it's mounting. You don't want the arm of the closer to interfere with the arm of the overhead stop. This rarely is the case, but always be on the lookout for potential conflicts.

Secondly, overhead stops are sized. This means different models are used with different door widths.

  • 23-27'' - model 702 and 792
  • 27-33'' - model 703 and 793
  • 33-39'' - model 704 and 794
  • 39-45'' - model 705 and 795
  • 45-51'' - model 706 and 796

A standard commercial door being 36'' wide would use a Size 4 stop.

If the standard door require a stop only, order model 704S (794S for abusive applications).

Should you wish to add the hold open feature to the stop, order model 704H (794H for abusive applications).

To complicate matters further, the above sizes are for standard hinges and pivots with an offset design. Should you be using center hung pivots, the chart changes. See the manufacturer's brochure for the center hung chart.

MODEL STOP ONLY STOP w/HOLD OPEN
702 702S 702H
703 703S 703H
704 704S 704H
705 705S 705H
706 706S 706H

MODEL STOP ONLY STOP w/HOLD OPEN
792 792S 792H
793 793S 793H
794 794S 794H
795 795S 795H
796 796S 796H

The last area of concern is the mounting. Both the door and the frame should be reinforced where the unit mounts. With metal doors and frames, a 1/4'' steel plate is welded to the backside. This area must be drilled and tapped for the mounting bolts. When possible, a more secure installation can be accomplished by using through bolts.
