Tips From The Pros

The 450 Series is a popular choice due to it's flexibility. The track and arm combination allows for smooth opening and closing motions. Plus, two hold open options are avialable.

The standard hold open (H) allows for only one position setting, anywhere between 85 and 110 degrees. The exact position is set during installation. Once a position is selected, it will remain the only hold open position.

The friction hold open (F) allows for a moving hold open point, often called a multi-point hold open. The door can be opened to any position and the friction of the track will hold it in place. The amount of friction is adjustable using an Allen Wrench.

The Glynn Johnson 450 Series overhead stops are sized. This means different models are used with different door widths.

  • 18-23'' - models 451S, 451H, 451F
  • 23-27'' - models 452S, 452H, 452F
  • 27-33'' - models 453S, 453H, 453F
  • 33-39'' - models 454S, 454H, 454F
  • 39-45'' - models 455S, 455H, 455F

To complicate matters further, the above sizes are for standard hinges and pivots with an offset design. Should you be using center hung pivots, the chart changes. See the manufacturer's brochure for the center hung chart.

MODEL STOP ONLY STOP w/HOLD OPEN
452 452S 452H
453 453S 453H
454 454S 454H
455 455S 455H
456 456S 456H

The last area of concern is the mounting. Both the door and the frame should be reinforced where the unit mounts. With metal doors and frames, a 1/4'' steel plate is welded to the backside. This area must be drilled and tapped for the mounting bolts. When possible, a more secure installation can be accomplished by using through bolts.
