Floor Closers

The spindle is the key to a proper floor closer installation and Dorma is the only manufacturer with a replaceable spindle.  It is available in about a dozen different spindle heights and is easily changed in the field.

Pivots

Most people get in trouble with pivots just deciding which basic type to order. There are two basic pivot types: Center Hung and Offset Hung.

Offset Hung is by far the most popular and they swing a door much like a standard butt hinge.  The pivot point is offset from the door so as it swings open, the door goes out and around any frame molding.

pivot types

Dorma pivots that are offset hung are easy to spot as they begin "OP".  For example, offset pivot model OP440 is the most popular model.  The "440" indicates the maximum door weight the pivot can hold.

Center hung pivot models begin with "CP" for center pivot.  These pivot types are often used for doors that swing both ways (double acting). They can also be used on single acting doors if the frame includes a frame stop.  Standard door frames use a frame stop and those without a stop are called a "cased opening".  Center hung pivots can be used with either type of frame, but note that that door bevel must be rounded instead of the standard, slanted bevel.

offset pivotOffset pivots use an "L" shaped arm.

The door rests on the long part of the arm and the spindle mounts to the short part of the arm.  Since the spindle is the pivot point, the door pivots at a point that is offset from the door itself.

This allows them to swing both directions.

Dorma Products

Dorma is known for their quality products and innovative designs. But most people don't know that Dorma products are sold at substantially lower prices than the competition.

Although floor closers and pivots are the big Dorma sellers, locks and exit devices are offered at lower prices than you'd expect to pay.

Locks present an especially good opportunity to save on cost. Dorma locks are designed after the old Schlage D series locks and are every bit as heavy duty. Many customers were unhappy when Schlage revised the old D series and came up with the ND series. They simply didn't like the new design. Dorma locks are direct replacements for the old D series.
