Exit Alarms

Detex recently reworked models EA-500 (small unit) and EA-2500 (large unit). The new design makes them easier to install plus replaces the old rim cylinder with a mortise cylinder.

The new models have an ''X'' added, so they become

• EAX-500
• EAX-2500

The wall mount unit, EAX-2500 is available as surface mount or recessed. A magnetic door switch is required and is normally sold separately. But the unit will not operate without the switch so we include one with every order.

The door-mounted unit, EAX-500 can also be mounted to the wall.  Since this is the unconventional mounting method we don't include the door switch, but you can order it separately at a very low cost.

When  mounted to a door, the unit works as follows. A mounting tab is included with the EAX-500 that mounts to the door frame. This tab maintains within the magnetic field of the unit when the door is closed. Once the door is opened, the tab is no longer within the field and the alarm sounds.

Exit Device

The V40 is designed to work on most types of doors and comes standard with a 9 volt battery. This is called the ''EB'' version (B for battery). Also available is a hardwired version for areas not normally monitored. It requires a separate power supply and version ''EH'' must be ordered (H is for hard wired).

Detex is well known for their quality products, but this one could use a slight re-design. It works well on solid wood and metal doors, but is not long enough to fit glass doors. 2'' longer and it would work fine.

If you have an aluminum storefront door (standard 36'' wide), you'll need to order the optional NSK1 kit, which is basically an extended end cap. Detex would have done well to just make the standard device longer, but this is the solution for now.

Also disappointing is the standard strike that comes with the V40. It is designed to mortise into a wood frame. Since no one really uses wood frames this one is a puzzle. But the good news is you can opt for the ''99'' strike, which is a standard surface mount strike. It is available at no additional cost and we stock plenty of these strikes.
