Solid Doors

Doors with no glass are the easiest to work with since both the door and frame have plenty of flat surface area to mount hardware.  In general, you can mix and match hardware as you please.

A system is built based on two criteria:

  • What is the application (door use)?
  • What type of electronic lock is preferred?

Below are some pre-configured systems based on the criteria.

Glass Doors

There's precious little surface area on a glass door for mounting hardware.  Take  special care before ordering products.

In short, mag locks usually work better than electric strikes.  Narrow style mag locks are available that are specially designed for slim spaces.  Plus, you avoid the problems associated with adding an electric strike to standard glass door locks.  These typically use a swing-up style bolt and don't work well with electric strikes.

Mag locks make for a better choice for glass doors.  They are easier to install and work more consistently than electric strikes.  The down side is they are more expensive than electric strikes.

There are a few electric strikes that work with this type of bolt, but they are hard to install and generally don't work too well.

Access Control Tips

Here's a few pointers to get you headed in the right direction.

Product Tips Quick Tip

Our pre-configured systems above all use keypads as the input device.  Card swipes, prox readers, etc. all work equally well.  If you have an existing system with a card swipe for example, it should work just fine.

NOTE: Mag locks require a release on the inside of the door.  This could be a push button, electrified exit bar, etc.

Product Tips Quick Tip

Mag locks come with built-in issues most people don't even think about.  For one, mag locks simply hold the door closed and lock people in as well as out.  A device (like a push button) must be installed on the inside of the door to release the lock.  Also, mag locks require a filler plate to be installed on the frame in order to provide enough surface area to mount the lock.

Product Tips Quick Tip

Glass door locks are typically the style with a swing up bolt.  Most often, these are made by Adams Rite.  Electric strikes can be found for these locks types, though there is darned few out there.  That is why most installations opt for a mag lock instead of an electric strike.
